Liatris pycnostachya is best grown in full sun with soil ranging from well-drained moist to occasionally dry.
Growth Habit/Description:
Can reach a maximum height of 5 feet, but usually ranges 2-4. Has purple disc flowers arranged in heads on a coarse, hairy, leafy stem. Below the stem, there are long purplish bracts, distinguishing it from other species of Liatrus. Native to central and southeastern United States.

Yes. In the fall, the seed heads become dry and fluffy and available for harvest in the fall.

Yes. Liatris pycnostachya can attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, and the seeds are often eaten by birds. Cattle also graze on them, and benefits towards their grazing range has been observed.
Origin of Name: The epithet used (pycnostachya) means, roughly translated, crowded. The 'Blazing Star' in its common name refers to its fluffy diskflowers resembling them.
Related Plant Species: Liatrus pycnostachya is mostly differentiated by its long bracts. It is also one of the tallest Liatrus species cultivated. The liatris plants are typically characterized by their hardiness and purple, thistle-like flowers.

It is theorized that the corm was used by Native Americans medicinally.
